How to Measure Glass Joint Size with a Bic Pen

People tend to get confused when trying to figure out what size glass joint they have. But it’s not as complicated as people make it out to be. Especially now that we have 3 easy steps listed right here to help you measure your glass joint with ease. But first, you will need one thing….
1. Grab a standard Bic Pen. Make sure it's an actual BIC, because other pens this style slightly vary.
2. Identify whether the glass joint is male or female. It’s pretty simple and easy to remember. Male parts go into female parts. Get it?
3. Use the pictures and instructions below to figure out the size of the glass joint.
If the glass joint you want to measure is a MALE joint, use the back end of the Bic Pen. Line them up like in the picture below.
A 10mm Male joint will be about the same thickness as the back end of the bic pen, maybe even slightly smaller.
A 14mm Male joint will be a bit thicker than the back end of a bic pen. Some 14mm Male joints the bic pen slips in snuggly.
An 18mm Male joint will be quite a bit larger then the back end of a pic ben. There is a noticeable gap and you can easily wiggle it around inside.
If the glass joint you want to measure is a FEMALE joint, use the front end of the Bic Pen (the part you write with). Line them up like the picture below. You want the tip of the pen to be slightly inside the joint.
The inner diameter of a 10mm Female joint will only be about the length of the tip of the pen. In this case the gold section. This color varies from pen to pen, but the sections are always the same.
The inner diameter of a 14mm Female joint will be somewhere in the middle of the blue section (color varies from pen to pen, but the sections are always the same).
The inner diameter of an 18mm Female joint will be very close to where the white section meets blue section (color varies from pen to pen, but the sections are always the same).
Can't find a BIC pen, but have a ruler handy? Here's another way to get the job done.
1. Grab a basic ruler that measures in inches.
2. Identify whether the glass joint is male or female. It’s pretty simple and easy to remember. Male parts go into female parts. Get it?
3. Measure the diameter (width) of the glass joint. For male joints, measure the outer diameter. For female joints, measure the inner diameter.
4. Use the chart below to figure out the size of the glass joint:
Male and about 6/16” wide = 10mm
Female and about 8/16” wide = 10mm
Male and about 8/16” wide = 14mm
Female and about 10/16” wide = 14mm
Male and about 10/16” wide = 18mm
Female and about 12/16” wide = 18mm
